Kathleen Collins

Can she find a killer in a town where the basest desires are allowed to run free?

There are zombies in the Dead Zone and Juliana Norris is sent to take care of the problem. And for there to be zombies, there had to be bodies. When vampires are found to be the culprits, Juliana is sent undercover in the red light district of Kansas City. Lying to her mate, Thomas Kendrick, isn’t something she wants to do, but she’s in another vampire’s territory and Thomas would not be pleased. Besides, she’s more than capable of doing the job and she needs to prove it to everyone. Most of all herself.

Charles Morgan is in control of the Kansas City area, making a rich living off his various enterprises. Juliana goes undercover at the strip club Lust and gets sucked into his dark, decadent world. More victims turn up and the Agency is positive they’ve got their man, but Juliana is not so sure. When the Agency refuses to listen, she reluctantly turns to Thomas for help. He intervenes but finds Juliana unaware of the danger she is in and discovers she may just be too deep for him to save.

Author Interview

Did you always wanted to be a writer? If not what did you want to be?

Honestly, yes. A writer and a mom were my dreams when I was a little girl. I’ve managed both of those so I guess I’m pretty lucky.

When did you first consider yourself a “writer”?

I considered myself a “real” writer when I started submitting to agents seriously for the first time.

How long did it take to get your first book published?

I can’t even tell you how long I worked on that book from idea to publication. I can tell you that it was over a year between the offer of a contract and the book coming out though.

Do you do another job except for writing and can you tell us more about it?

I work as a clerk in a prosecutor’s office. It’s always a little different.

What is the name of your latest book, and if you had to summarize it in less than 20 words what would you say?

Blood Slave. An Altered law enforcement agent goes undercover in a notorious red light district to find a killer.

Who is your publisher? Or do you self-publish?

Carina Press/Harlequin was the publisher for the first two books in the series. I have now taken over the publication of the rest of the series so this most recent book is all me.

How long does it usually take you to write a book, from the original idea to finishing writing it?

I can completely finish a book, including edits and all in six months. This one took quite a bit longer due to some personal life stuff that wasn’t very happy.

What can we expect from you in the future? ie More books of the same genre? Books of a different genre?

There are two more books, a novella and a short story in the Realm Walker series. I am also working on a contemporary romance and my kids are begging me to write a YA or middle grade novel so they can read it.

What genre would you place your books into?

Urban Fantasy. Some would say Paranormal Romance but the romance is definitely a secondary storyline.

What made you decide to write that genre of book?

I like being able to make up my own worlds with my own rules.

Do you have a favorite character from your books? And why are they your favorite?

I love my heroine Juliana of course. Probably my favorite thing about her is her growth through the books and her unwavering ability to take care of herself.

How long have you been writing?, and who or what inspired you to write?

I wrote my first story in kindergarten. I don’t know why I started writing, I just know I was always making up stories in my head.

Do you have a certain routine you have for writing? ie You listen to music, sit in a certain chair?

I have to listen to music. Every book has its own playlist which really helps get me into the world of the story.

Do you read all the reviews of your book/books?

Honestly, I try not to, but sometimes I can’t help it. If someone sends me a link to a great review I’ll read it for sure, but I try not to read the bad ones. Fortunately I haven’t had a lot of those but no book is going to work for everyone, that’s just the way it is.

Do you choose a title first, or write the book then choose the title?

Somewhere in between. I usually get the idea for the book and maybe start writing it and then I’ll come up with the title. Titles are hard.

How do you come up with characters names and place names in your books?

Baby name books. J No seriously, they really are a great resource. Sometimes I’ll look at the meaning behind the name and use a name because of that. The city in my books is called New Hope. It was named that by the Altered that established it as a refuge after their kind were first revealed to the world at large.

Are character names and place names decided after their creation? Or do you pick a character/place name and then invent them?

Usually the name comes with the creation, especially with characters. For New Hope, it was definitely an after the fact thing when I realized I had never identified the city they were in.

Do you decide on character traits (ie shy, quiet, tomboy girl) before writing the whole book or as you go along?

Characters actually tend to pop in my head mostly fully formed. Sometimes though they’ll surprise me as a write and I’ll realize they maybe have some traits I hadn’t expected.

Are there any hidden messages or morals contained in your books? (Morals as in like Aesops Fables type of "The moral of this story is..")

Not really.

Which format of book do you prefer, eBook, hardback, or paperback?

Any and all books are good books. I’ll take them in any way shape or form.

What is your favorite book and Why? Have you read it more than once?

Why don’t you just ask me which of my kids is my favorite? That’s an impossible question to answer. As for books I’ve read over and over again: Jane Eyre, Sense and Sensibility, The Mummy by Anne Rice, The Kate Daniels series by Ilona Andrews and Katie MacAlister’s contemporary romances.

Do you think books transfer to movies well? Which is you favorite/worst book to movie transfer?

Sometimes. I think they did a really good job with the Harry Potter films for example.

Your favorite food is?

Cake Batter Ice Cream

Your favorite singer/group is?

Another hard one…Sam Hunt, Daughtry, needtobreathe

Your favorite color is?

 Purple

Your favorite Author is?

Agh, why do you keep doing this to me? I’ll go with Terri L Austin, R.L. Naquin, and Shannon Butcher because not only are they great writers, they are awesome people.
